Salida Tourist Information

Things to Do in Salida and Chaffee County

In 2004, Outside Magazine named the "sweetly unpretentious town of Salida" as one of the 20 "Dream Towns + Adventure Hideouts (& Sweet Land Deals)." Located in the Upper Arkansas River Valley, Salida is below the Continental Divide in the Banana Belt. The Sawatch Mt. Range to the Northwest, Sangre de Cristo Mt. Range to the South, and the Mosquito Mt. Range to the North provide a mild climate for Salida known as the Banana Belt; creating ideal conditions for year-round outdoor recreation. The area has 12 peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation.

Salida sits at 7,080 feet elevation. For those of you from the lowlands, remember to drink a lot of water (even when you’re not thirsty). The major cause of altitude illnesses is going too high too fast. Given time, your body can adapt to the decrease in oxygen molecules at a specific altitude. This process is known as acclimatization and generally takes 1-3 days at that altitude.
